Quantitative methods II: Big theory

چکیده
In this second report on quantitative methods, I consider the foundational triumvirate that underpins sub-discipline: data, and theory. argue that, although ‘big data’ and, more recently, code’ may have captured limelight, theory is invaluable should not be disregarded. Showcasing integral role of in human geography, identify three kinds useful (old school, enduring conceptual) along way, highlight beneficial ways which they contribute to our thinking about data methods. Throughout, emphasize a crucial component contemporary future methods development.

A Neural Theory of Punishment and Avoidance, II: Quantitative Theory
Quantitative neural networks are derived from psychological postulates about punishment and avoidance. The classical notion that drive reduction is reinforcing is replaced by a precise physiological altetAative akin to Miller's "Go" mechanism and Estes's "amplifier" elements. Cell clusters d} and dj are introduced which supply negative and positive incentive motivation, respectively, for classi...
متن کاملIntegral Equation Methods in Potential Theory. II
where p, q are vector variables specifying points on L and where dq stands for the arc differential at q. As has already been pointed out (part I), this equation maynot exhibit a solution for L, but the difficulty can always be trivially obviated by a change of scale. If so, o-(q) generates potentials Oq(P), q5(P) defined by (5) and (6) of part I (Jaswon i963), where P denotes an interior or ex...
متن کاملBig data need big theory too
The current interest in big data, machine learning and data analytics has generated the widespread impression that such methods are capable of solving most problems without the need for conventional scientific methods of inquiry. Interest in these methods is intensifying, accelerated by the ease with which digitized data can be acquired in virtually all fields of endeavour, from science, health...
متن کاملBig Data Begets Big Database Theory
Industry analysts describe Big Data in terms of three V’s: volume, velocity, variety. The data is too big to process with current tools; it arrives too fast for optimal storage and indexing; and it is too heterogeneous to fit into a rigid schema. There is a huge pressure on database researchers to study, explain, and solve the technical challenges in big data, but we find no inspiration in the ...
متن کاملThe Big Bang Theory
The first theoretical evidence for the Big Bang came from Alexander Friedmann in 1922, when he showed that Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity predicted that the universe was either expanding or contracting. Einstein was so upset with this result that he introduced a cosmological constant into his theory which would make the universe static. Later he said that this was his biggest bl...
